Guitar Scales
Every scale a guitarist needs for soloing, in all 12 keys: the notes, the whole neck, the five boxes with TAB, and backing tracks. New to soloing? Start with the A minor pentatonic.
Minor Pentatonic Scale
The first scale most guitarists learn for soloing: five notes, five boxes, and the sound of almost every rock and blues solo.
Major Pentatonic Scale
The bright, sweet-sounding pentatonic: country, pop and classic rock solos over major-key songs.
Blues Scale
The minor pentatonic plus one extra note, the 'blue note' (b5), which gives blues and rock licks their bite.
Major Blues Scale
The major pentatonic plus the b3: the slide from b3 to 3 is the classic country-blues move.
Major Scale
The seven-note scale everything else is measured against: do-re-mi on the guitar neck.
Natural Minor Scale
The seven-note minor scale (the Aeolian mode): darker and more melodic than the minor pentatonic.
Dorian Mode
A minor scale with a raised 6th: the jazzy, funky minor sound of Santana and 'Oye Como Va'.
Mixolydian Mode
A major scale with a flat 7th: the sound of rock riffs, blues-rock and jam bands over dominant chords.
Phrygian Mode
A minor scale with a flat 2nd: the dark, Spanish and metal sound.
Lydian Mode
A major scale with a raised 4th: dreamy and floating, the film-score and Satriani sound.
Harmonic Minor Scale
A natural minor scale with a raised 7th: the neoclassical, exotic sound of Malmsteen and Gypsy jazz.
Melodic Minor Scale
A minor scale with a raised 6th and 7th: smooth and modern, a jazz staple.
